Duties Description The Department of Mathematics, Computer and Information Sciences at SUNY Old Westbury is seeking a Director of the Mathematics Learning Center. This ten (10) month position involves tutoring, hiring and scheduling student tutors, running group sessions, and other administrative and academic duties.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director of the Mathematics Learning Center will fill the primary role of an academic tutor in mathematics for the Mathematics/CIS Department and will be responsible for providing tutoring services for all mathematics, statistics, computer science courses and help center open to supporting the entire college.
The Director will also be responsible for managing the Math Learning Center (MLC) and maintaining up-to-date records. The Director will be responsible for the following:
Tutoring students taking mathematics courses.
Responsible for budget and payroll for the MLC.
Recruitment, hiring, orientation, training and supervision of peer tutors (including a formal tutor training program).
Preparation of study sheets to be used by peer tutors and students seeking assistance in the MLC.
Design and coordinate (in collaboration with faculty) supplemental instruction as required.
Maintaining records regarding utilization of the tutoring services.
Supervision and scheduling of review sessions for various courses.
Supervise usage of MLC equipment such as computers, calculators and books.
Preparation and coordination of college-wide Mathematics placement exams and college-wide Mathematics proficiency exams.
Assign mathematics placement for new students as required.
Assessment of the Math Learning Center.
Coordinate with other student and academic support services as needed.
The Director reports to the Chair of the Mathematics and Computer & Information Sciences Department. The Director works closely with the Assistant Provost and with the other tutoring units. It is the function of the Director to establish a close working relationship with the departmental faculty. It is the responsibility of the Director to see that the MLC runs in a professional and effective way to meet the needs of the students. The Director will perform assessment to determine the utilization and effectiveness of the tutoring services of the Math Learning Center.
The Director's contractual obligations will be on a ten (10) month basis. Weekly schedules will be determined in consultation with the supervisor. Some evening/weekend hours will be required to support evening students.
Minimum Qualifications Required Qualifications:
A minimum of Master's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education or a related field.
A minimum of three (3) years' experience teaching and/or tutoring at the high school level or post high school level mathematics.
Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Detailed oriented and strong problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
Ability to handle multiple tasks with competing priorities effectively and follow through on completion of assignments.
Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize work.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task.
Availability to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
Experience working with a culturally diverse population.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. or ABD in Master's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education or a related field.
Teaching experience at the college level.
Experience in managing a tutoring lab (or similar), experience in hiring and scheduling tutors, and experience in running help group sessions.
