Job Specifics

Duties Description The Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI) is a dedicated research facility of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) located on the grounds of Rockland Psychiatric Center in Orangeburg, NY. NKI is affiliated with the New York University Langone Medical Center (NYULMC), located in midtown Manhattan. Applications are currently being invited for a full-time Research Scientist 3 - Electrophysiologist position within NKI’s Emotional Brain Institute (EBI).

The Electrophysiologist will serve as a shared resource within EBI, providing technical expertise and experimental support. Primary responsibilities include:
• Performing patch-clamp and other electrophysiological recordings in support of projects led by multiple principal investigators.
• Implementing and optimizing voltage dye and related optical techniques as needed.
• Collaborating with researchers from different laboratories to design, troubleshoot, and execute experiments tailored to specific project goals.
• Maintaining accurate records of experimental procedures and results.
• Training and assisting laboratory personnel in electrophysiological methods when appropriate.
• Managing experimental timelines to balance and prioritize requests from different investigators.
• Ensuring proper maintenance of electrophysiology equipment.
• Contributing to manuscripts, presentations, and grant applications by providing high-quality data and technical input.

Minimum Qualifications Minimum: bachelor’s degree and four years of professional research experience** in an appropriate field.

Preferred: The mission of EBI is “to understand emotions and their impact on mind and behavior.” EBI research relies mainly on mouse and rat models across the lifespan—from perinatal development to aging—and makes extensive use of transgenic mice and rats, viral methods, and opto/chemogenetic manipulations. The department consists of eight research groups.

NKI is seeking an experienced Electrophysiologist to perform the slice electrophysiology experiments required by the different laboratories in EBI. The preferred candidate should have:
• A Ph.D. in neuroscience, physiology, or a related field.
• Demonstrated expertise in patch-clamp electrophysiology.
• Experience with voltage-sensitive dyes and related imaging techniques.
• Strong organizational and time management skills to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
• Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with principal investigators, postdoctoral fellows, and students across EBI.
• Flexibility and adaptability to meet the diverse experimental needs of several laboratories.
